Tasting Notes
Nose: Caramel, cinnamon, rye spice and some ethanol followed by a big hit of young toasted oak. There’s clove, fresh dill and a hint of nutmeg.
Palate: Medium mouth feel, quite warm and dominated by baking spices, chiefly cinnamon, but I get some allspice and nutmeg as well. There’s more oak, brown sugar and some nice citrus notes. It’s hot and boozy but not unpleasantly harsh.
Finish: Medium length, cinnamon, menthol, a touch of chocolate, and finally drying oak.
Rating: 66/100 – Good | Better than average
A very solid MGP rye and a real gem at its price point. Roulette Rye is big and boozy with heaps of cinnamon spice and young oak notes. While I’ve enjoyed this sample neat, it really does shine in a rye forward cocktail and doesn’t get lost in one of my personal favorites: the Old Pal. In my area, I can find Roulette Rye for $24 and at that price I’ll be grabbing a bottle.
