Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich with caramel, oak, gingerbread, rye spice, clove, tobacco, cacao nib, and peppermint. An incredibly inviting rye nose that feels perfectly tailored for enjoying on a cold winter night.
Palate: Thick and syrupy mouth feel, hit of spices upfront, black pepper, clove, more peppermint, toasted oak, salted caramel, vanilla, and that signature Alberta pine.
Finish: Long length, short burst of peppermint and pine followed by buttery gingerbread, chocolate, some light melon, and drying oak. The peppermint note returns and lingers.
Rating: 91/100 – Incredible | An all time favorite
Phenomenal. Cooper Spirits has nailed it again. Lock Stock & Barrel 18 Year takes well aged Alberta rye in a different direction, bringing a bit less of the 100% rye punch and instead focusing on richer notes of salted caramel and gingerbread. It’s a surprisingly sweet and desserty whiskey, considering its mash bill, yet it exhibits just enough spice for balance. There’s this peppermint note that I really love that seems to tag along for the entire ride, giving the rye a wintery feel. Overall, I think I still prefer the boldness of its cousin Hochstadter’s 16 Year, but Lock Stock & Barrel 18 Year is still a backup worthy bottle and a new addition to my favorites list.
