WhistlePig The Boss Hog VII: Magellan’s Atlantic 17 Year Single Barrel Rye, 53.9%
Nose: An intense aroma of baking spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and allspice followed by woody notes of teak and toasted cedar, brown sugar sweetness, there’s some apple and cherry in there as well
Palate: Those same baking spices maintain their intensity as they explode onto the palate, clove dominates and then nutmeg takes the lead, the mouthfeel is medium to thick with a syrupy heaviness, more teak and cedar, vanilla, brandied cherries, caramel
Finish: Medium to long length, menthol, orange tang, cherry cola, gentle cinnamon and oak spices
Rating: 92/100 – Incredible | An all time favorite
What an awesome bottle, and one that takes Alberta rye in a very different and exciting direction. In short, it’s a glazed cinnamon roll in a glass. Vanilla and maples syrup notes are woven together with a medley of baking spices and finally some toasted wood to create a beast of a whiskey. Be prepared to shell out, but this is a rye that can go toe-to-toe with the big boys.
Additional Info: 17 year old Alberta rye, finished first in Spanish oak for three weeks and then South American Teakwood casks for three days
