Tasting Notes
Nose: Opens with graham crackers, rye bread and cocoa powder followed by a wave of vanilla with nutmeg and cinnamon spices. It’s nothing like a traditional rye whiskey nose but it’s still great.
Palate: Medium to thick mouth feel and drinks below proof. Chocolate muffins are the dominant note here followed by caramel, cherry, and more graham cracker. Cinnamon spice builds over time with some pleasant nutmeg.
Finish: Medium to long length, drying oak with a moderately chalky texture. Cocoa and vanilla linger.
Rating: 83/100 – Excellent | Really quite exceptional
What an excellent pick by the team at Gordon’s. This Old Potrero rye is really something. Rich and malty, it completely defies my expectations for an American rye and still ends up tasting delicious. The breadiness coupled with the numerous dessert notes create what I can only describe as “funky chocolate muffins in a bottle”, and I mean that in the best way. It’s certainly one of the most unique bottles in my collection and makes me want to seek out more malted ryes to compare.
