Tasting Notes
Nose: Big oak char, vanilla, leather, caramel, cherries and apple pie. It’s a very enticing nose but subtle, and requires working past a bit of ethanol to get all the notes.
Palate: Medium to thick mouth feel with some initial heat, cinnamon spice, Luxardo cherries, and tons of caramel. Cocoa and rich, dark oak followed by red apples and vanilla.
Finish: Medium length with baking spices: cinnamon and allspice, more caramel and a final wave of vanilla and barrel char.
Rating: 84/100 – Excellent | Really quite exceptional
This is a really nice wheated release from Heaven Hill. It’s well balanced at an age where the oak influence is quite noticeable, but isn’t yet the leading flavor note. Instead it’s driven more by its thick caramel sweetness, and those cinnamon notes that I’ve found are common in a lot of wheated bourbons. Side by side against the 14 year release, I notice that Old Fitz 9 does lack the complexity of its older brother, but everything is executed so well that it still makes a really great whiskey. At a $90 MSRP, this is a good buy and if you’re someone like me who really loves the bottle, you might even consider paying more.
