Tasting Notes
Nose: Caramel and vanilla, rye spice and black pepper, green apple, candied banana.
Palate: Surprisingly lively mouth feel for 43% with plenty of spice: rye, cinnamon and black pepper. There’s a bit more apple followed by caramel, brown sugar, and vanilla sweetness. The depth of flavor is excellent.
Finish: Medium length, oak, warming black pepper and cinnamon spices with gentle menthol and a touch more brown sugar.
Rating: 70/100 – Great | Well above average
Lot 40 has long been one of my favorite budget ryes and for good reason. While not overly complex, it packs a ton of flavor into an easy drinking proof while maintaining excellent balance between sweet and spicy. It’s a rye that can be enjoyed both by beginners and seasoned whiskey veterans, and one that I will always keep on my shelf.
Additional Info: Copper pot distilled. Aged in new oak casks with a #2 char.
