Tasting Notes
Nose: Brown sugar, rye spice, gingerbread, mint, orange candy, clove, cinnamon, fresh dill, caramel, and toasted oak. Nothing that you wouldn’t expect in a rye but really wonderfully developed nonetheless.
Palate: Medium weight, great body for the proof. Opens with an explosion rye and baking spice before shifting to caramel and brown sugar sweetness. There’s layers of cocoa, mint, green apple, orange, and marshmallow.
Finish: Medium length, toasted oak, chocolate, allspice, and heap of fresh spearmint.
Rating: 72/100 – Great | Well above average
Another great Lot 40 bottle. Compared against the mass market 100% unmalted rye variant, I find this one to be much more in-line with the 11 year and 12 year releases that I enjoy so much. The nose especially is really something wonderful with so many layers. I’m not sure if that’s due to the addition of malted rye or some other difference in Hiram Walker’s process but this whisky kicks ass – even at 43%. I can’t help but wish they had stuck with this recipe.
Additional Info: Copper pot distilled. Aged in new oak casks with a #2 char.
